Good morning! I thought it would be fun to share some portraits I took of some farm animals this weekend. My old camera broke about a month ago, and I spent a few weeks researching/ agonizing over cameras and scraping together the pennies to get a new one. My new (brand new, which is a first for me!) camera arrived last week, and we have been having a lot of fun getting acquainted. Seriously exciting.
On Saturday, we went to one of our favorite farms, full of charming and eager models for me. We brought one of my daughter's friends, and although we were technically there for an Easter-themed hunt and to pick up some produce, it was really all about enjoying the animals.
If you've been around for any amount of time, you know I hold a special place in my heart for goats!
And sheep are Jeff's favorite. A scene like this of sheep grazing on beautiful pasture always makes my heart stop.
I love the variety of birds on this farm-- they all look so happy and healthy.

Turkeys strike me as the most ironic and oblivious birds ever. They are so ugly, yet so full of themselves, parading around like peacocks.
I love photographing pigs. I see so much personality in their faces.
This is the maternity ward at the farm. No ewes or mama goats, since they have already had their wee ones. But not a single heifer was standing, and they all looked like they were panting.
This one, off resting on her own, struck me as particularly elegant.
And before we go... Just two more sweet little creatures!

I was going to say goats. But then I thought of the chickens. And ducks. And I really like sheep too- I'm following Herdwick and Zwartbles sheep herds on Twitter, which isn't helping my obsession! I see the pictures of the lambs and wondering whether I couldn't just squeeze a couple in the garden...

ReplyDeleteI have to agree that baby goats are just about the cutest farm animal ever, a friend of mine has a few of them, followed by my alpacas with their big eyes.
ReplyDeleteYes, I agree about turkeys! They are ridiculous when they strut. We had hordes of wild ones here all winter, then they left for a while and now they're back again. Also...we just got two piglets to raise over the summer. I have not visited their piggy house yet, though. I had foot surgery and can't get way down there. I try NOT to establish any kind of relationship with them because I would be too sad when the time comes.

Someday...I think I will have goats and make cheese.
Ooops...I almost forgot to tell you that the day I had the surgery and we were returning home afterwards we got to see a cow giving birth in the pastures on our country road. We stopped (I was still not feeling any pain thanks to blocks) for about 40 minutes and watched until the little guy or gal tried to stand. Then it was definitely time to go home!
We raise buffalo. They take a beautiful photo if a girl can get one, but they inevitably, just before I snap the shot another buffalo will wander into the shot and ruin it by pooping, mounting, or licking. It's maddening. I love your portraits. The pigs are my favorite.
