My ceramics classes have ended for now (until the fall) and I thought I'd show you some of the things I've made. I think I have about 30 pieces I've come home with, but of course they are not all worth showing. The last time I shared, it was pieces that I had hand-built. Since then, I have been introduced to the wheel, have loved learning to work that way, and look forward to improving and doing more with that process. Here are my favorites, with flowers from our garden.
There are a few more to pick up after they've been fired, and I imagine that those will actually be my best ones, since I see little (or big!) improvements each week. I love looking at the progression of my earliest pots to the latest ones-- there is a huge difference, and it's exciting to be learning a new skill. And, of course, it is really satisfying to see flowers from my own yard in vessels from my own hands.

Your glazes have the look of a professional potter! Beautiful, I especially love the very first one. Did you post them in the order that you made them?
ReplyDeleteThanks Liene-- that first one is my favorite, too. These were all made within two weeks of each other. The earliest ones aren't much to look at (a couple were are nice, but had dead flowers in them, so I skipped) especially because of terrible glazing! There were vessels that I really liked, but the glazing just kind of ruined them. I'm learning!

DeleteYou are really talented Ariana - gorgeous pots! I wish I was more artistically talented. I took a pottery class in middle school and I was absolutely horrendous. And it wasn't just because of my age - other kids did great. I remember when we made a coil pot and mine ended up being the most hideous lumpy, low rectangular dish - and it was supposed to be a round, upright pot!! It is a wonder I passed the class! haha But yours - they are lovely - the shapes as well as the glazes. The second one really speaks to me especially - the white one with straight sides. And I love the last line of this post "it is really satisfying to see flowers from my own yard in vessels from my own hands." LOVE it! I think it is amazing how much we can create with our own two hands if we are willing to put in the effort. I'm trying to do more and more from scratch. In fact just got an ice cream maker so I can do that from scratch as well - I really like being able to use the best ingredients and eliminate icky preservatives and chemicals.

DeleteMarisa-- I also took a ceramics class when I was much younger, and was absolutely no good on the wheel. I had it in my mind that I would LOVE to be good at it, but when it came to controlling the clay, I just couldn't do it. It was a very, very pleasant surprise the first time I went for it a few months ago, and succeeded in centering the clay and making a little pot. I think it has everything to do with me becoming a massage therapist, honing my hand strength and ability to perceive what I am feeling through my fingertips. Don't let middle school failures keep you from checking back in with any sort of art you're interested in!
DeleteThe brown butter ice cream you posted on FB looks so awesome! It really IS satisfying to be able to make the things you love yourself, right? In my "old life" in the US we had an ice cream maker... We miss it. But, it still hasn't gotten hot here, so I guess we can live without for a little longer. :)
Well that gives me new hope!! I'm not particularly artistic though and I always wished I were - my mom has most of the artistic talent in our family. What I'd really love to do is take singing lessons. I'm sure I will one day but so far I just haven't found the time. If you do ever get an ice cream maker again let me know and I'll send you that recipe. I don't mean to throw around big words but it really was exquisite! And it has gotten me on a brown butter kick - want to put it in everything!
