I know, I know-- this is super late! I have been taking a little break from blogging this week, since it's Amelia's last few days of Christmas vacation, and I don't want to spend my days glued to the computer. On top of that, for the first time in years, my husband came down with a nasty cold which seems to be making up for lost opportunities, and now it looks like I am slipping into that awful mire of earaches, coughing, and general blech-iness. But I did want to share some great links with you from December.
Let's start with something pretty.
Beauty:
I just love this collection of beautiful images from Andrea Gentl of Hungry Ghost: sometimes i drift. These photos just take me away for a moment.
I also enjoyed these: Underwater Tango Photos by Katerina Bodrunova.
Inspiration:
This series of photographs of a family summer in France just made me smile and feel all nostalgic.
I am really excited about this projects at The Reconstructionists, "a yearlong celebration of remarkable women who have changed how we see the world." The paintings are beautiful, and I love the quotations they have highlighted from these fascinating women.
Growing Food:
It's that really exciting time of year, when it's too cold to work the soil much, but we can stay inside and dream and plan about all the things we'll grow, once it's time.
It's no secret that I dream about growing all of my own food someday. I think for most of us, it's just that-- a daydream. But Dawn has been writing some really great posts about self-sufficiency, and how much land is actually required to become self-sufficient. Really interesting!
For those of you who enjoyed my butchery post on breaking down a pig, I think you will appreciate Roz's post about her farm-to-table turkey experience.
I wanted to share this resource-- it's a list of seed companies owned by Monsanto, and a list of authentic companies from which you will want to source your seed-- I honestly had no idea that so many of the seed brands I'm familiar with were owned by Monsanto. Yikes!
Food:
As I mentioned, there's not a whole lot going on in the garden right now, and that's why it's especially important to find fresh ways to use the winter produce. I think that this simple Crunchy Kale and Roasted Beet Salad fits the bill perfectly!
I have been channeling more energy than usual into fermenting things in my kitchen-- it's a great way to both preserve produce and get more nutrition out of everything. If you are interested, I will be sharing my experience soon with using a traditional German fermenting crock to make sauerkraut, but in the meantime, you should go check out a great list of fermentation posts for some inspiration at Real Food Suomi. While you're there, read her post about traditional foods disappearing in Europe, and let me know what you think (especially my European friends!)
Do you crave more sweets in the winter? I have really been in the mood for things that would go well with a cup of tea. This is tricky for us, since we have some food allergies to work around, but this recipe for grain-free shortbread looks beautiful and delicious. We will definitely be trying it out this week!
Is eating better part of your plan for the new year? This should help! I appreciated the way Lindsey of Homemade Mommy breaks down the components of eating real food, so you can turn just about any recipe into a nourishing one.
This quote from Virginia Woolf sums it up beautifully, doesn't it?
And I will leave you with that. I hope you are all well, and that 2013 has been good to you so far!
Which kinds of links do you enjoy reading most?

I would like to see those lists mentioned above but when I clicked on them the message said "url not found." To me it looks like that page has been taken down. I can tell you why I think that but I will put it in a private email, sorry.
ReplyDeleteThanks for letting me know about the link-- what a shame! It was good when I posted it-- I'll have to look for another source.
